UFC welterweight stalwart Jon Fitch (21-3) is currently in discussions to rematch Thiago Alves (16-6) at UFC 111 from the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., on March 27, setting up a fantastic 170-pound showdown that will prove once and for all how far both former number one contenders have [...] After a string of a dozen consecutive victories against notables ranging from Yushin Okami to Carlos Condit to Mike Pyle to Paul Daley to Robbie Lawler, Jake Shields has clearly established himself as one of the sport’s top fighters. But with a Saturday Strikeforce title fight with Jason “Mayhem” Miller earning the winner the vacant middleweight [...] Jon Fitch wasn’t kidding when he mentioned yesterday that a “big” fight was in the works after his opponent for UFC 106, Ricardo Almeida, bowed out of the contest after he sustained a major knee injury while training. Fitch is currently in discussions to rematch Thiago Alves at UFC 107 from the FedEx Forum in Memphis, [...] It’s safe to say Demian Maia has made a successful transition from grappling sensation to mixed martial arts star. In fact, he’s made it look way too easy. As a submission grappler he accumulated a laundry list of accomplishments in jiu-jitsu, including seven state championships in Brazil, a Brazilian national championship, two world championships, three World Cup [...] A rematch against UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva, not Rich Franklin at UFC 103 on Sept. 19, is what Dan Henderson can focus on now that company president Dana White has shuffled the deck in the wake of Affliction MMA’s demise. Affliction refugee Vitor Belfort is now booked to replace Henderson opposite Franklin in the UFC [...] It’s been roughly three years since Kenny Florian’s first title shot in which he lost a bloody, five round battle to mixed martial arts veteran Sean Sherk at UFC 64. Needless to say, a lot has changed since that juncture in his career. Six consecutive victories over top lightweight contenders including Roger Huerta, Joe Stevenson, and Joe [...] I come from the school of thought that says title holders who lose their belts deserve another crack at the title as long as they bounce back with wins (or sometimes two wins if there are other marketable contenders with a legitimate claim to the #1 contender position).
